Australian Science Innovations is a non-profit organisation which runs the Science Summer School, the Science Olympiads and the Rio Tinto Big Science Competition.
Our aim is to enthuse students about science. We want to encourage them to study science and consider careers in science, engineering and medicine. Our activities are for students aged between 12 and 17, and their teachers.
The International Science Olympiads is an international competition for students aged about 15-16. Every year, Australia sends separate teams in biology, chemistry and physics to compete for medals against students from 80 other countries. The competitions are held in different countries each year.
The first step to competing in the Science Olympiads is to enter the National Qualifying Exams. About 72 students gaining top marks in this exam will be invited to attend the Science Summer School at Monash University, for an intensive 15 days of lectures and laboratory work. The Science Olympiad teams are selected from students participating in the Summer School.
The Big Science Competition is a one hour competition consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. It is open to students of all abilities and ages, and tests their science knowledge and problem-solving ability. Diagnostic result sheets are provided to teachers. Students are sent a certificate recording their performance. The Big Science Competition will be held on 1 September in 2010.
The dates for registering and participating in all our events are in the ASI Calendar.
